The course is structured in two parts. The first covers the historical and constitutional foundations of the EU and its essential values and principles. This is followed by an examination of the sources of EU law and their hierarchy, as well as the authority of this law. This first part concludes with the functioning of the EU, i.e. its competences, its institutions and the drafting of its law. The second, shorter part will deal with material law in order to illustrate and enable students to integrate the first part in a practical way. It will focus in particular on how the internal market shapes the daily lives of citizens and the opportunities for European business.
