This course provides an introduction to the design of digital electronic systems, from basic digital circuits to modern processor architectures. We start by explaining the key role of abstraction in the design of digital electronic systems, and then move across abstraction levels during the course. We start with basic logic circuits (combinational versus sequential), move to main logic circuits (memories, calculation units, control logic), micro architectures to end up with modern processor architectures. In parallel, students will gain practical experience by designing a processor architecture on an FGPA board using a hardware description language (Verilog).
