This course focuses on the contributions psychology can offer to help tackle problems of sustainable development, including human activities that affect the environment and poverty. Specifically, the course will present theories, models and approaches deriving from empirical psychology that contribute to sustainable behavior by (1) identifying and selecting behaviors that impact on sustainable development, (2) identifying the factors that cause, sustain or reinforce these behaviors, (3) consider evidence-based and / or theory-informed interventions to modify relevant behaviors and their determinants, and (4) evaluate the effects of these interventions. The topics tackled in this course include: pro-environmental behaviors (e.g., recycling, reducing energy consumption, saving water, using environmentally-friendly transport modalities); behaviors related to sustainable societies (e.g., reducing inequalities); strategies to implement pro-environmental and sustainable behavior; and the dissemination of sustainable practices.
