The course is based on the
analysis of (extracts of) key contemporary texts written in English. A first
part is devoted to the concept of “literary genre,” its uses and limits. The
three main literary genres are then studied. Students are familiarized with the
language of poetry, drama (through the analysis of Harold Pinter’s play Betrayal), the main narratological
concepts (several short stories are discussed), and major literary theories thanks to the in-depth analysis of a short novel and critical material.
