The course introduces students to the main paradigms of scientific research and reasoning in the social sciences. It covers the fundamentals of research design in PPE: developing research questions, building theoretical frameworks, formulating empirically testable hypotheses, and choosing appropriate methodological approaches (qualitative and/or quantitative). Attention is given to the notions of causality and inference, as well as to critical reading of academic work. Through lectures and practical exercises, students acquire the skills needed to design, assess, and present a rigorous research project.
